BEST THINGS TO DO AND SEE IN THE KOMMETJIE AREA

WALK THE LENGTH OF THE FAMOUS NOORDHOEK LONG BEACH

Have you ever wanted to walk the length of the famous Noordhoek Long Beach from Kommetjie to Noordhoek and back ?  Well now you can - stay with us and walk the relative easy 8km round trip from our beach house - preferably at at low tide.

Depending on the season you might even see the pink Flamingos flying in formation along the way or the endangered oyster catcher on the rocks.

The Kakapo shipwreck is also visible on the same stretch of beach.  Stop along the way and explore the wreck of this steamship on the way.

Once in Noordhoek, you can walk to the various restaurants and bars just off the main parking lot and if you don't feel like walking back - you can always catch an Uber and head back home!

This stretch of beach is also popular with horse riders from Imhoff Farm or Noordhoek side.  Add this one to your must  see and must do list for Kommetjie, Cape Town.

WALK TO THE SS KAKAPO SHIPWRECK ON NOORDHOEK'S LONG BEACH

The wreck of the Kakapo is about 30 minutes walk from your accommodation and is visible above the high-tide line on Noordhoek Beach.

The Kakapo was a steamship, built in Scotland in 1898.  The ship was on its maiden voyage to Australia and as she rounded Hout Bay the captain mistook Chapmans Peak for Cape Point and by the time he realised his mistake the Kakapo had driven ashore on Noordhoek Beach.

Thankfully no lives were lost as the crew of twenty managed to scramble ashore. All attempts to pull the stricken vessel off the sandy beach failed and she was scrapped where she lay.

To get there, walk north along Noordhoek Beach from your beach house accomodation in Kommetjie (25 - 30 minutes). The remains of the boiler, rudder and ribs are all still visible and lie high up on the beach.  If you have ever asked what can I do and see in Kommetjie - then add this one to your list.

CLIMB THE SLANGKOP LIGHTHOUSE IN KOMMETJIE

The Slangkop Lighthouse in Kommetjie is about 45 minutes walk from your beachfront accommodation in Klein Slangkop Estate.

Work on the lighthouse began in 1914 and was completed only in 1919, because of the war. The lighthouse is made of cast iron and is 33 meters in circumference. It is painted white to stand out against the green backdrop of the mountain.

The focal plane of the light is 41 meters above high water so as to be visible below dense mist, flashing four times per 30 seconds. This Lighthouse has been burning brightly since 1914, becoming fully automated in 1979. The tower's light shimmers 33 nautical miles out to sea from its 33 Meter mast!

There are guided tours offered at the Lighthouse where you will get to meet the Senior Lighthouse Keeper and you can climb the spiral staircase to the top of the lighthouse. You will get to learn about the history of the lighthouse and hear many more interesting stories about the lighthouse. The views from above are worth the climb.

To get there walk towards the village of Kommetjie from your accommodation.  It's an easy walk of not more than 45 minutes.  Add to your must do and must see list for Kommetjie.

CLIMB SLANGKOP MOUNTAIN UP TO THE WW2 RADAR STATION

Put on your walking shoes and set off towards Slangkop Mountain, just above the town of Kommetjie. You can enter the mountain trails from either the Lighthouse side or near the Roman Catholic church. From your accommodation, it’s a short 20-30 minute hike into town, followed by another 30 to 45 minutes up the mountain to reach Camp Cobra, an abandoned World War II radar station and barracks at the top of Slangkop Mountain.

While you're there, take the time to explore the lookout towers and barracks.

The radar station played a vital role during World War II, keeping watch for German submarines that were active in these waters. It was part of a network of radar stations strategically positioned along the South African coastline.

The views from the top are truly breathtaking. The main red-brick building, which served as barracks, once housed military personnel tasked with operating the radar and monitoring for enemy ships.
